Electroplankton Trapy
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Trapy plankton make sounds as they swim over graceful lines made up of linked triangles. The creatures follow the lines you trace along the water. There are six types of Trapy in all, each with a unique color and sound. All Trapy plankton produce different tones depending on the direction they swim. They produce the lowest-pitched sounds when they swim to the right and produce higher-pitched sounds as their path veers to the left.

Electroplankton Hanenbow
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Normally aquatic creatures, Hanenbow sometimes use floating leaves to launch themselves out of the water, creating strange sounds and melodies as they bounce off the leaves. Entire schools of Hanenbow have been known to launch out of the water, one after another. As a leaf is repeatedly hit by flying Hanenbow, it gradually changes color. This also alters the sound made by bouncing Hanenbow. When all the leaves turn red, a flower will bloom. It remains unclear why the Hanenbow display this curious behavior.

Electroplankton Rec-Rec
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Rec-Rec are fishlike plankton that feed on sound waves. They absorb sound waves transmitted through water and use them as a form of nutrition. The sound waves that the Rec-Rec eat are then stored inside their bodies until they have been digested. Once the digestion process is complete, they play back the sounds in perfect four-second intervals. While these sounds are playfully emitted, wave patterns can be seen pulsating on their bodies. Rec-Rec always swim side by side in schools of four. When they swim at different speeds, the frequency with which they emit sounds also changes.

Electroplankton Nanocarp
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Nanocarp have very sensitive hearing. Using their two ears to sense vibrations coming through the water, these plankton can distinguish sound quality and frequency. They display very interesting reactions to the sound of humans clapping or breathing. Nanocarp are also excellent swimmers. They have a tendency to swim in formations of 16 and react together when they detect sounds. These plankton emit sounds on their own when they sense waves on the water's surface. When this happens, the pitch of sounds they produce changes depending on where the Nanocarp is located.

Electroplankton Beatnes
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Beatnes are curious plankton with geometrically shaped heads that form vertical strands like seaweed. Their bodies are made up of eight sections, each featuring a distinctive diamond-shaped tail. The sound of a Beatnes can vary wildly depending on which segment of the body is tapped. However, all of the sounds closely resemble the short-wave and triangular-wave sound effects from a Nintendo Entertainment System™ sound chip. When Beatnes are tapped in time with a rhythm, they continue to repeat the sounds in perfect time for a short period.

Exclusive interview: Hugo Smits - Creator of Flipper for DSiWare

Exclusive on DSiWare Generation blog. Interview with Hugo Smits / Good Bye Galaxy Games, the creator (and almost one-man army) of Flipper.

1. What is your personal background in game development and the team's behind Flipper?

I started programming videogames when I was 9 years old. When I became 15 I started to do it professionally (well, they paid me to program games). I’m 23 right now. I mostly worked as a 3D programmer, creating 3D engines for handheld systems. But I also did normal programming work, game design and pixel art on a few occasions.

The team for Flipper consist out of me. I did the game design, level design and programming. I even did the art in the beginning. But after a few months I decided to get an artist. So I called up Paul Veer after seeing his work.

He did all the art that you see in Flipper as of today. He also did all the concept art. He’s awesome when it comes to pixels!

2. Tell us shortly about Flipper, what is the game about?

Basically it’s a puzzle-adventure game. The hero of the game lost his goldfish (named Flipper) and you need to find it back. This sounds a lot easier than it is, because there are a lot of obstacles in every level.

3. How did you decided to do a game for DSiWare?

It started as a cardridge game, but after my publisher went bankrupt (thanks to the financial crisis). I was left on my own. DSi-ware seemed like a good idea. It was a bit tricky at the start, because the DSi wasn’t released so nobody knew what Dsi-ware would do.

A employee of Nintendo played the game and loved it. He thought it would do great on Dsi-ware, and that helped me to decided it.

4. Since when is Flipper in development and when will it be available for purchase as DSiWare?

Well, I’m on the project for over a year now. But that also includes the time I was searching for a (new) publisher for the cardridge version. Development on the DSi-ware version didn’t start until January of this year.

5. What was the most challenging part in developing a game for DSi/DSiWare?

Well the fact that I did almost everything on my own. I also started school in September, and I’ve been doing Flipper in the nights (only slept for 3 hours a night).

Other than that the development of the voxel engine (keeping it fast) was pretty hard. Normally voxels only run on big medical computers. So it was challenging to do them on a somewhat ‘less’ powerful computer!

6. What would you do next time different, when developing the next game for same platform?

Haha, yes. I wouldn’t do everything alone. I wouldn’t start a education at the same time. And I would try to pitch a brand new IP to publisher in time of crisis.

But I know myself. After Flipper is out, I’ll take a 3 week break. And after that I will probably start another DSi-ware project, and work on it totally alone.. haha. I just love game development so much it’s hard to give parts to other people!

7. Who's the publisher for game and how does he support you?

Xform is the publisher, they help me a lot. One of the things is that development of a good Dsi-ware title costs a lot, so they help out in that area. But they also are helping me to get the paper work in order (there’s a lot of paper work to be done, really, it’s surprised me) and they did the fantastic 3th trailer!

They also handle bizz things so I can fully focus on development.

Besides that they encourage me to make the most amazing game I can, and they give tips on how to improve the game.

Thank you Hugo for the interview!

Taito brings Space Invaders to DSiWare in Japan

Space Invaders Extreme is the latest DS title to be shrunk down for DSiWare. The Japanese version of the download service took delivery today of Space Invaders Extreme Z, a 500 DSi Point title that attempts to capture the spirt of its retail brothers.

Taito refers to Space Invaders Extreme Z as a port of Space Invaders Extreme 2, released earlier this year. Both titles share the same rhythm-influenced gameplay that has won critical acclaim worldwide.

Of course, there's more to this than just a port. Actually, make that less. The DSiWare version features just time attack and score attack modes. The concept of "stages" is gone, with players having access to just three courses featuring different enemy patterns. Joining the stages, the game does away with extra lives; you have access to only your three starting lives.

Taito refers to Extreme Z as its first DSiWare release, suggesting that more could be on the way. Let's hope its plans include territories outside of Japan as well.

Update - Ball Fighter & Robot Rescue from Teyon

Ball Fighter & Robot Rescue (DSiWare update)

Poland-based developer and publisher Teyon revealed today screenshots of 2 upcoming DSiWare™ titles: Robot Rescue and Ball Fighter, along with detailed game descriptions. The games are already finished and soon they will be available on DSiWare. Both games are rated E for EVERYONE (with Comic Mischief descriptor for Robot Rescue) by ESRB.

In Robot Rescue you need to release robots trapped in evil computer labyrinths and get them to an exit. All robots are linked together, so when you move one of them, you move them all. Most importantly you have to look out for traps! Missions are full of deadly obstacles, so be careful.

In Ball Fighter your task is to destroy colorful spheres. Catch and throw them back before they reach the bottom of the well. Connect at least 3 of the same color vertically to make them explode and disappear. You can also encounter a few bonus types like rockets, bombs or brushes.
Find out more details at the game’s page.

More information on games will become available when the titles hit the DSiWare service.
